It’s not rare to hear about a theological seminary going out of business.
In recent years some schools have literally closed their doors and even had to sell their entire campuse. Some of these schools have had excellent federal government accreditations. They had buildings, wonderful accredited professors and government accreditation. Unfortunately some have not survived the lean times in which we live today in this world economy.

It’s not unheard of today for a seminary or bible college to have the following:
– Less than one hundred students,
– Multiple buildings to maintain, heat and cool.,
–  A lot of staff they cannot afford to pay.
– In many cases a federal accreditation they cannot afford to keep or afford to delete.
Keeping the accreditation in some cases may qualify them for federal money and
also allows them to charge an extremely high tuition. Of course when you have multiple
buildings and lots of staff you must have a lot of tuition dollars coming in or a
tremendous base of donations.

There are many today who have graduated from fine schools but the schools no longer exist. The financial times over the last twenty years completely drained them out of existence. This means they have a diploma from a non-existent school that can no longer
even offer them a transcript. Many may proudly point to a diploma that was earned from such an entity but the entity with all of it’s bells and whistles is no longer a school.

Before you consider enrolling into any theological seminary or bible college consider if they will be in existence over the next twenty years. If the school must have $30,000 to $100,000 to offer you a program they are most likely one of the schools that will eventually fall.

    +Seminaries that should survive: The seminaries sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention should be around ten to twenty years from now. However, beware, even the Southern Baptist Convention is no longer growing and starting to downsize their overall operations. State conventions have greatly cut staff and downsized their programs. Many of the Southern Baptist Seminaries have employed part-time adjunct faculty. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, considered the flagship seminary now employs pastors who now commute into the campus to teach one or two classes. This saves the seminary a fortune in full-time staff salary and benefits that it use to pay a large full-time faculty. Southern still has many full-time people but staff has greatly changed over the last twenty years.  Look for Southern Baptists to close one to two seminaries in the next ten years. The overall strength of the convention is still great in comparison to many denominations but maintaining all of the following seminaries will be impossible.

All of the above are excellent traditional seminaries. Cost will vary between $10,000 to $15,000 a year depending on your program and living needs.  Each program will take two to four years to complete.

Liberty Theological Seminary, Lynchburg, VA.
Very good traditional seminary and non-traditional seminary. School should be financially solvent for the next ten to twenty years. Good federally accredited seminary program. However, the school is very expensive. Look to spend $40,000 – $60,000 depending on your degree program and if you go the traditional route. Online courses are very expensive.
